Network Rail Britannia Bridge Lintel Repairs (FAQs)

Network Rail Britannia Bridge lintel repairs (FAQs)

The work is being done to refurbish the three towers on Britannia Bridge. It will see the installation of support beams underneath the stone lintels at the top of each tower.

Before the work can be carried out, scaffolding needs to be installed on the sides of the towers so that a working platform can be put in place above the highway.

In order for the scaffolding to be installed safely and disruption kept to a minimum, one lane of the A55 will be closed between 19:00 and 05:00 while the work is taking place. There will be traffic lights in place, as well as a temporary speed restriction of 40mph on the bridge.

Some of the work will require the bridge to be closed during the night for up to 20 minutes at a time from 19:00-05:00 on the following dates:

04/07/2022 - 07/07/2022

11/07/2022 - 15/07/2022

18/07/2022 - 19/07/2022

20/07/2022 - 21/07/2022

30/08/2022 - 31/08/2022

31/08/2022 - 06/09/2022

09/09/2022 - 13/09/2022

16/09/2022 - 19/09/2022

20/09/2022 - 21/09/2022

23/09/2022 - 27/09/2022

04/10/2022 - 11/10/2022

These temporary closures will be controlled by two way traffic lights at either side of the bridge.

The installation of the scaffolding with 20 minute closures is expected to be completed by the end of November 2022.

Please note that this could change if the weather impacts on the programme of work.

To ensure safety, work is not permitted to take place during high winds, so the programme is very much weather dependant. Wind speeds will be monitored regularly, and work stopped if there is any risk. Updates will be provided to the public via the Traffic Wales website and twitter channels.

As mentioned above the works are only permitted to be undertaken at night between 19:00 and 05:00 when traffic volumes are lower. The scaffolding is also being built up the sides of the towers from the rail deck level to help minimise disruption to traffic on the road.

Due to the nature of the work, the flow of traffic needs to be controlled during the installation of the scaffolding decks for safety reasons and protecting access to the three towers.
