Essential maintenance works are required at Taff River and Taff Rail bridges located immediately west of J32.
These works are to refurbish the bridge deck to provide a new waterproofing system, new expansion joints and surfacing to prevent the concrete deck from water ingress and winter salts while ensuring the ongoing serviceability of the structure.
We are also taking this opportunity to upgrade the safety barriers in this location.
The existing waterproofing has exceeded its lifespan and needs to be replaced.
The existing systems were installed at construction in 1978 and inspections have identified that this system has failed and water is leaking through the joints.
Failure to do this works now will lead to unplanned future interventions which would be more disruptive than these planned works.
Works are programmed to take approximately 13 weeks however this is dependent on weather and site progress.
The works will take 13 weeks as we need to work on one half of the bridges at a time to allow two lanes of traffic at all times during the day.
To ensure value for money and to maximise use of the lane closures SWTRA are refurbishing both Taff River and Taff Rail Bridges within the traffic management.
Our Contractor will work during the day and some night time works to shorten the programme as much as possible.
Full closure will take place on the following weekends:
18/09/21 – 20/09/21 2 nights – EB and WB Total Closure between J32 and J33 – Night time only
15/10/21 – 17/10/21 – 3 nights EB and WB Total Closure between J32 and J33– Night time only
01/11/21 – 03/11/21 – 3 nights EB and WB Total Closure between J32 and J33– Night time only
02/12/21 – 04/12/21 – 3 nights EB and WB Total Closure between J32 and J33– Night time only
These closures are required to install and remove traffic management between phases, required to protect the safety of the workforce.
Eastbound traffic will be diverted off at J34 to the A4119, A474 and A470 to J32.
Westbound traffic will be diverted off at J32 to the A470 south to the A48, A4232 to J33.
Due to the nature of the works the activities do not allow the road to be opened during the day due to the surfacing being removed from the bridge decks.
The activities are also weather dependent, and cooler temperatures at night are not suitable for installing waterproofing.
Some works may be noisy, where possible every effort will be made to undertake noisy activities during the day or the early part of a night shift.
Lane closure are needed to allow access to the bridge deck for the waterproofing works and to protect the workforce during the works.
Two lanes of traffic will be permitted at all times during the day.
