Where and Why?
Works to carry out upgrade to the intelligent transport systems fibre optic communications network between J32 Coryton and J34 Miskin, commencing on the 18/05/20 - 07/06/20 between 09:30-15:00. Partial hard shoulder closures will be in place for the duration of the works on weekdays, with accompanying lane 1 closures during the weekends.
The WG are delivering a multi-million pound upgrade scheme to its fibre optic communications network. This network provides the backbone for intelligent transport systems to manage the safe operation of the motorway and trunk road in Wales, from CCTV cameras to electronic messages, to traffic counters and emerging digital highway technologies. These systems ensure that our emergency services receive key information when it’s most needed, help to minimise congestion and to deliver safety measures whilst providing data for future road schemes.
The programme will provide resilience for our existing fibre network to help us ensure critical systems and information are always available to our teams and for the safety of road users.
Diversions and Safety Measures
The works are being carried during off-peak daytime hours to reduce the disruption and impact to the road user whilst negating the requirement for noisy night-time working.
Our contractors will be implementing safe methods of working to adhere to physical distancing measures
Given the current drop in road traffic, the danger from passing vehicles usually faced by the workforce at the roadside is significantly reduced
Lane 1 closures are programmed during the weekend only to coincide with the lowest traffic volumes
The M4 will remain open throughout the works to avoid disruption to essential travel.
