M4 Westbound J25 Caerleon to J25A Usk River 29/6/2020 – 11/7/2020 (10 nights 20:00 - 05:00 Mon-Fri) Essential carriageway maintenance works.

Where and Why?

Work to carry out essential carriageway maintenance works to a 1Km section of the M4 westbound carriageway between J25 Caerleon exit slip road and J25A Usk River exit slip road will commence on the 29/06/2020 for 10 nights (Mon-Fri).

This scheme has been brought forward in the year to make use of the quieter roads and lower traffic volumes due to cv-19 restrictions. As the workforce returns, it is hoped that a smoother road with clear road markings should improve driver satisfaction.

The resurfacing scheme has been combined with the SEWTC fast-track measures. In addition to the renewed carriageway surface, we will be providing additional lane destination markings to promote lane discipline. Lane destination markings help achieve the desired outcomes of the SEWTC to prevent late lane changes. With advanced road markings in combination with the current signs, road users will be given as much notice as possible to use the correct lanes. These works should result in a much smoother journey for all road users, free from pot holes, rutting, cracks and depressions

For more information on the potential benefits of this project and how we plan to improve congestion on the M4 around Newport see our page  Delivering Improvements on the M4.

Diversions and Safety Measures

The work will be carried out over the 10 nights 20:00 – 05:00 under a full westbound carriageway closure (between J24 off slip and J28 on slip). Traffic will be diverted at J24 (Coldra) westbound off slip, via the A48 (Newport SDR), returning onto the westbound M4 carriageway via J28 Tredegar Park westbound entry slip road.

The works are being carried will be undertaken during night-time closures when traffic flows are historically lower to avoid any queuing during peak journey times and to significantly minimise disruption to road users.
