M4 Prince of Wales bridge

M4 Severn Bridge National Highways

National Highways will be carrying out emergency essential carriageway works on the M4 Eastbound on the Prince of Wales Bridge. 

 

Following investigation works that have been conducted, National Highways have notified that the M4 J23 and J22 Prince of Wales Bridge will need to be closed eastbound for emergency works between 22:00 15/10/25 until 06:00 16/10/25.

The M48 Severn Bridge is restricted to vehicles over 7.5 tonnes only, vehicle under 7.5 tonnes will not be affected.

HGVs will need to use the below diversion from J24 along the A449/ A40.

Please note due to closures on J28 – J24 M4, HGVs that are travelling along the A48 Southern Distributor Road towards Coldra Roundabout should continue onto the A449 along the official diversion.

Cars and light vehicles: Use the M48 Severn Bridge

Heavy goods vehicles over 7.5 tonnes: The M48 weight limit still applies. Follow this route:

  • Exit at M4 junction 24
  • Take A449, then A40, then M50
  • Join M5 at junction 8
  • Continue to M5 junction 15
  • Rejoin M4 at Almondsbury
