PRIME Road Safety Trial for motorcyclists

PRIME (Perceptual Rider Information for Maximising Expertise and Enjoyment) is a new system of road markings and signs designed to help motorcyclists ride more safely. It guides riders into taking the best line through bends, making riding safer and more enjoyable.

The system uses three chevron-style road markings along with a road sign placed before them to give early warning and guidance.

Four trial locations were chosen on major roads in North and Mid Wales. These sites were selected because they had three or more injury collisions where the road layout was likely a contributing factor. The sites are:

  • Site 1: A487 Pantperthog, Gwynedd
  • Site 2: A5 Coed Bwlch Rhysgog, Llangollen
  • Site 3: A483 Lower Crochan Farm, Llanbadarn Fynydd
  • Site 4: A483 Glascoed Hall, south of Newtown

This trial has been commissioned by the Welsh Government. Key partners include the Welsh Government, North Wales Police, Dyfed-Powys Police, and the North & Mid Wales Trunk Road Agent (NMWTRA).

The system was originally developed in Scotland by Transport Scotland and Professor Alex Stedmon, an expert in rider behaviour and psychology.
