Work to upgrade electronic variable message signs is planned to be undertaken between September and December 2025.
Various message signs on the strategic road network are life-expired and difficult to maintain, due to lack of spare parts. We plan to upgrade up to 19 sites to the latest message sign technology. Newer LED sign technology will bring energy savings and better reliability of equipment.
The majority of signs for replacement are located on the M4 South East Wales. We are targeting key areas where message signs may have the greatest operational benefit, to inform road users when incidents occur or roadworks are planned.
The existing supporting structures for the signs will be re-used, to limit carbon emissions, costs and disruption associated with the upgrades.
Working parts from the signs we remove will be kept as spares. This will help us to continue to maintain and repair older signs still in use elsewhere on the network.
The majority of work will be carried out under lane closures overnight. Where possible, work will also be combined with other planned activities to reduce traffic management deployments on the network.
No diversion needed.
