Road Safety Week 2023

Picture explaining road safety week

Road Safety Week is an annual campaign, organised by Brake, the road safety charity. Every year, thousands of communities, schools and companies get involved to promote road safety where they live and work. Traffic Wales is talking part to help spread Brake’s message, with the hope it saves lives.

Let’s Talk About Speed

Five people die on UK roads every day. One in four of those are attributed to excessive speed as a contributing factor.

In the last year, 279 young men and 50 women, between the age of 15 – 29 were killed in traffic accidents. The probability of injury increases exponentially with impact speed.

A crash at 30mph is twice as likely to cause severe injury than a crash at 20mph. A head on collision between two cars travelling at 30mph carries the same energy as a single car colliding with a wall at 60mph.

‘‘I turn onto the A55 slip roads every day on my way to work. Turning one day in the rain I could feel the car lose grip and skid slightly, even though I wasn’t doing anything differently. I often think back on this, not changing my behaviour when conditions change, even for minor manoeuvres.’ - Ewan

'It can be tempting to rush home after a long day. But I'm also acutely aware that I'm more tired than usual after a 12-hour shift, so my reaction times & attention span might not be as good as they were at the start of the day.' - Rhys
