Strong winds across the viaducts can be hazardous to traffic.
Traffic restrictions, reduced speed limits and a bridge closure may be needed to ensure the safety of drivers.
Find further information below about how we deal with windy conditions on the viaducts.
We use dedicated forecasts and monitoring equipment on the bridge to help measure wind speeds. These forecasts are more accurate than those provided in the media and may differ from what is reported.
Based on weather forecasts, we follow the below guidance:
Wind speed of over 55mph:
- Viaducts will close to all traffic.
We understand that will cause disruption, but in order not endanger lives or cause accidents we must put the above measures in place.
In preparation for a potential full closure we will 1 lane southbound on the A483 between J1 and J2. This traffic control measure must be set in advance when wind speeds are lower for safety.
Diversion
In preparation for a potential full closure we will close lane two on both sides of the bridge. This traffic control measure must be set in advance when wind speeds are lower for safety.
