Respect the Red X

The Red X signals are essential to to keep everyone safe on the roads. They show when a lane is closed, which helps drivers who may be having trouble. They also make a safe space for emergency services, recovery operators and people working on the road.

You must not enter or proceed in a lane closed by a Red X signal.

When you see the Red X, it means that lane is closed and you can't drive in it. It’s there for your safety and it’s illegal to ignore it.  Sometimes, a Red X signal is activated well in advance to facilitate access for emergency services or to assist drivers in re-joining the motorway from emergency areas. Please help by leaving spaces in traffic so others can move to open lanes.

Signs will show when the closed lane is open again. They might show speed limits or tell you when the restriction ends. Even if you've passed a problem, don't drive in a closed lane because there could be more problems ahead.

Remember, it's against the law and dangerous to drive in a Red X lane. If you're caught, you might get a fine of up to £100 and three points on your license. In serious cases, you might even have to go to court. It's all about keeping everyone safe on the road, so please follow these important signals.
