Crickhowell Resurfacing Phase 2 FAQ’s

The first phase of works on the A40 from the junction at Castle Road to the zebra crossing by the Crickhowell Fire Station was successfully delivered in early 2025. The second phase of works on the A40 extends from the zebra crossing by the Crickhowell Fire Station to the access for the Asda petrol station. Works are planned to be undertaken between Monday 27th April and Friday 19th June 2026.  Note: Further communications will be issued in advance of any subsequent phases to be delivered.

Due to the complexity of delivering the work, varying traffic management arrangements will be required throughout the programme. A detailed breakdown of the proposed restrictions and programme is provided below.

Due to the deteriorating condition of the carriageway on the A40 within Crickhowell, Amey was commissioned by NMWTRA, on behalf of the Welsh Government (WG), to develop a pavement renewal design and programme for this section of the strategic road network. These works will help improve resilience of the network and reduce future reactive maintenance activities. Phase 1 of the works — extended along the A40 from the junction at Castle Road to the zebra crossing by the Crickhowell Fire Station and was successfully delivered in early 2025. We are now preparing to deliver Phase 2, scheduled to take place between April 2026 and June 2026. Phase 2 involves resurfacing from the zebra crossing by the Crickhowell Fire Station to the access for the Asda petrol station. To make the most of the temporary traffic management (TTM) measures required for these works, we are also including several improvement schemes aimed at enhancing pedestrian infrastructure and drainage. These include:
  • Replacement of the existing linear drains and upgrades to combined kerb drainage.
  • Renewal of defective unground drainage assets.
  • Renewal of end-of-life traffic signs.
  • Improvements to the existing zebra crossing outside the Bear Hotel.
  • Improvement to multiple existing dropped crossings along the A40.
  • A detailed breakdown of the proposed temporary traffic management arrangements and dates is provided on our roadworks page here

** dates provisional, may be subject to change

To minimise disruption to the local community and businesses, we have taken the following steps: • May Day & Whit Holiday Exclusion: No works will be carried out during the holiday period in the last week of May to reduce the impact on local businesses. • Temporary Traffic Management: The majority of works are to be undertaken at night, under closures with daytime lane closures and traffic lights where required, to try minimise disruption. • Weekend Working: Both daytime and night-time weekend working will be used where possible to reduce overall disruption. • Coordinated Delivery: Multiple schemes have been unified to maximise the efficiency of temporary traffic management and minimise repeated disruption. • Parking: Free parking for 1 hour is to be provided at Beaufort Street Car Park during the works.

Yes, access will be maintained to all businesses and properties during the works. There may be periods where access is limited, and marshals will escort pedestrians through the works.

During this period it is expected that there will be delays to travel and people are advised to plan ahead and to allow additional time for their journeys.

Access will be maintained for all delivery vehicles, depending on the phase of works marshals may be required to escort vehicles through the works and provide suitable locations for vehicles to unload. Further details will be provided by the principal contractor to local businesses, so suitable arrangements can be made.

The temporary traffic management has been developed to ensure the majority of Crickhowell is still accessible for all vehicles including the emergency services, where localised closures are in place, emergency vehicles will be accommodated.

The temporary traffic management has been developed to ensure that Crickhowell is still accessible for all vehicles, including buses in the daytime. We have liaised with Powys county council regarding the works, who will make the schools and local bus service aware there will be travels delays during these works.
