FAQS A55 J34 (Ewloe) and J35 Dobshill Eastbound Concrete Carriageway Major Resurfacing Works

Work to carry out essential major carriageway resurfacing between A55 Junction 34 (Ewloe) and A55 Junction 35 Dobshill Eastbound only. Works noted will be undertaken between Sunday 22nd February 2026 and Saturday 21st March 2026

The works involve:

  • removal of the worn-out carriageway surface

  • repairs and/or replacement of the underlying concrete slabs

  • resurfacing with an improved surfacing product

  • Ironwork replacement

  • replacing a sections of the road restraint system

The works are required as the carriageway surface has reached the end of its serviceable life. Once repairs are complete, the new surfacing will have none of the existing transverse joints which will help to reduce associated road noise from this section. The work will also help to reduce any potential unplanned carriageway closures for emergency surfacing repairs on this section of the A55.

The works will be carried out between 22nd February and the 21st of March 2026 using:

  • single carriageway lane closures during weekdays (06:00 – 20:00),
  • full closures overnight on weekdays (20:00 – 06:00) and full weekend closures (Friday 20:00 – Monday-6:00).
  • Eastbound carriageway only.

To achieve this programme, the contractor will work in shifts enabling a 24/7 working schedule.

We have liaised closely with the adjacent Highway Authorities, ( Flintshire County Council, Cheshire West and Chester Council and National Highways) to ensure the most suitable diversions routes are used to most effectively manage traffic throughout the period of the works.

NOTE: for full closures, traffic diversions will be as detailed on plans below.

In order to complete these works in such a short period of time, there will be overnight working which will include higher than usual level of noise at times.

There are some activities within the works that require dry weather, and materials, which require minimum temperatures to be installed. We have given the timing of this project much consideration and we believe we have picked the optimal compromise between traffic flows and weather/temperature requirements. Progress updates will be issued on the Traffic Wales website (www.traffic.wales) and on Twitter @TrafficWalesN. These channels will also advise road users about congestion and expected journey times.
