The fibre communications network provides the backbone for intelligent transport systems to manage the safe operation of the motorway and trunk road in Wales. This includes:
- Traffic cameras
- electronic message boards
- Traffic counters
- and emerging digital highway technologies.
These systems ensure that emergency services receive key information when it’s most needed, help to minimise congestion and to deliver safety measures whilst providing data for future road schemes.
This upgrade will provide resilience for our existing fibre network to help us ensure critical systems and information are always available to our teams and for the safety of road users.
It is envisaged that all works will be completed by March 2024.
Works are currently taking place on the A477, with works in the future on A40, A48 and M4.
Please see links on the right-hand side to find out how these projects will affect your journey.
We will reduce disruption to road users on the network by:
- Where necessary, limiting full road closures to overnight only when traffic flows are lower.
- removing traffic management over the holiday periods wherever possible.
- using multiple teams on site to accelerate the programme wherever possible.
- limiting working on weekends wherever possible.
Some works may be noisy however, the majority of the work operations will be no louder than the normal noise associated with traffic using the dual carriageway on a daily basis.
Some activities are weather dependent, and cooler temperatures at night are not suitable for them to be undertaken. It is also easier and safer to receive and maintain deliveries during the day, as well as reducing noise in the area.
