At the start of each winter, we treat around 1900 kilometres of routes in Wales and typically spend 83 nights spreading salt on the roads.
We monitor the roads 24 hours a day, seven days a week and use cameras, traffic flow data and road weather forecasts to know when to carry out winter maintenance.
Our Traffic Officers, maintenance partners and the emergency services decide which areas will be gritted, reduce speed limits and set overhead signs to warn motorists of severe weather and road conditions. Local Authorities are responsible for gritting non-trunk roads.
