Kai Tudor has joined the North and Mid Wales Trunk Road Agent as a Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Degree Apprentice working in the Intelligent Transport Systems team. Follow his story below.
Being an apprentice for the agency is a good way of gaining my qualifications and learning in the workplace, working for the agency makes you feel like a part of the team, and i think that is very important.
Working with the agency makes you realise how much work goes into keeping the roads operational, which i find really interesting.
I initially had plans to go to university as a standard, 3 year course, but i heard about this apprenticeship opportunity and applied.
This apprenticeship allowed me to stay local, and earn a wage while I get the qualification I want.
I would have to repay the university costs for many years without this apprenticeship, with this course I finish with a Bachelor’s Degree and 3 years of experience. It’s a no-brainer.
I work as a Mechanical and Electrical Engineering Degree Apprentice working with the ITS team (Intelligent Transport Systems), looking after assets on the trunk road network.
I work 4 days a week in the office or out on-site, and 1 day a week studying and attending lectures. The apprenticeship runs for 3 years.
The apprenticeship leaves me with various career paths for me to take, but it’s clear that the apprenticeship has prepared me for the future more than traditional university courses are likely to have done.
I am developing skills within the workplace, therefore I think a future working with the Agency may be an option.
As an apprentice, I have gained many practical skills rather than theoretical work alone, I have learned about managing assets and projects, how electrical works are carried out in practical situations, and how engineers work in the industry.
Yes, everyone at the agency has been very supportive and are always happy to stop and explain aspects of the work to expand my knowledge.
I started the apprenticeship after completing a level 3 qualification in college, this apprenticeship has enabled me to go from a level 3 to a degree level.
Do some research on what type of work you’d like to do, and what skill you’d like to develop, as well as what sector of work you’d like to end up in.
