Driving in Strong Winds

Picture of a tree

Strong winds can be dangerous for vehicles because wind gusts can be unexpected and there may be more debris on the road.

Before travelling, check our traffic alerts for restrictions or road closures. If non trunk roads are closed, check with your local authority.

Before you travel

Check the forecast

Plan and ensure you know the weather for your journey.

Do you need to travel?

Consider whether you need to travel or can delay your journey.

High-sided vehicles

During strong winds, there will be more restrictions for high-sided vehicles. Make sure you are aware of these restrictions before travelling.

Check your vehicle

Make sure your lights are working and that you know how to use your fog lights.

During your journey

Reduce your speed

Slow down and remain observant - you may encounter debris from fallen trees, branches or other items blown by winds.

Be aware of exposed areas

Watch out for gaps in trees or buildings when passing larger, high-sided vehicles or when crossing bridges – as these are more vulnerable to strong winds. Keep room on either side of your vehicle if blown sideways.

Stay in control

Gusts of wind can cause your vehicle to shake and glide. Always keep reasonable control of your vehicle by using both hands on the steering wheel.
